Paranormal Edinburgh – Gordon Rutter
As a fan of Fortean subjects and also a regular visitor to Edinburgh I was looking forward to reading this book. Mr. Rutter provides us with tour around Edinburgh and our favourite Fortean subjects succinctly and without fuss, at no point does he imply an explanation of any event he has just discussed. For that he should be applauded, too many author’s will spend more time offering their explanation/theories for an event instead of just presenting well researched facts. The subjects covered in the book include big Cats, ghosts, UFO’s, fairies and of course witches (where would Auld Reekie be without a stake burning or two). Additionally Mr. Rutter offers us some chapters on the investigations of famous locales as The Covenanter’s Prison, St. Mary’s Close and The Vaults all of which can be researched further via the web addresses provided. You should really hear the EVP that’s been collected. Again he provides no conclusion to any events at these locales and quite rightly so as such investigations are probably ongoing and no conclusions can be drawn. A fine addition to any Fortean library if only for the fact there’s probably a few stories in the book you haven’t heard before. If your travelling to Edinburgh and your looking for a tourist guide for a Fortean sojourn this book is ideal due to it’s wealth of information and due to it’s size, it will quite easily fit into a travel bag or rucksack. Indeed if I had any negative comments to share it would be that I, personally, would like to have seen more pages as Mr. Rutter presents facts and information without fanfare and without prejudice and I have no doubt Edinburgh still has much to tell.
