Cabinets of Curiosities
A Cabinet of Curiosities is a collection of wonders. Historically many collections have gone on to form the basis of museums the world over.
I have my own Cabinet (actually a living room) of Curiosities and I shall be adding items from my collection to these pages. New items will appear here and then they will be moved to the backroom of the cabinet so they can be browsed at your leisure.
Enjoy.
This is one of several death masks in my collection. A death mask is a plaster cast of a persons face, taken, naturally, once they are dead. These were particularly popular before the invention of photography when they gave one of the few ways of capturing a trued likeness of an individual.
This particular one is of Pope Pius IX (1792 – 1878). He served as Pope for 32 years making him the longest serving pope ever. His body is allegedly incorruptible and he has been beatified. One more miracle and I should have the death mask of a Saint!
